It took me 3 application cycles to get into med school. I sat the £250 entrance exam 3 times. I completed a full-time Master's degree in a year whilst working full-time to help improve my chances. This quote was a small something that helped spur me on. Eventually I made it and I'm a Doctor now.

That’s what makes a good med student or surgeon. Or air traffic controller. If you make a mistake, you learn from it and don’t let it happen again. All of the good doctors out there have killed somebody before.

Or to put it another way, there's failure, then there's ethical failure, and the latter absolutely deserves all the excuses in the world to not want to court it. (But then what about if someone says "you're then making too many excuses" ... and it is precisely that failure mode that I get myself tied in knots about in many cases with things like, say, why it took so long for me to even begin to get into political "organizing" - I didn't wanna break personal boundaries in making relationships around sensitive topics due to a dearth of social skill and knowledge of how to navigate the innuendo-laden social world.)

I guess. His success percentage was off the charts, but thanks for sharing, MJ.

My take*

Keep on failing and you too can be Michael Jordan

This was a Nike commercial. I belive its black and white and he's walking out the area in a long coat in slow motion.

The ad for the movie "How to be a player" did a spoof of this commercial.

It still is easy to say this since you got another chance after your failures.

Many of us who do fail? Never get a second chance. We fail once? That's it. We never get another chance.

I hear you. Sometimes I feel same way. Yet, even incredibly successful people will eventually, like all us run out of chances. I wish you the best crazycokid :)

Sometimes you can do everything right and still fail because of factors outside your control. The question is if thay makes you lose your chances.

For all we know the next Michael Jordan twisted their ankle on their big day.

I think temporarily not completing your goal isn’t an outright failure. Especially in a situation such as playing basketball. He was on a path towards obtaining the highest accolade and achieved it. Learning from your mistakes is a part of the recipe for success. Let’s put this in a scenario most of us go through…. Lets say you work a job as a cleaner/janitor and the main goal of that job is to have the area you’re assigned to be clean and presentable. You have little experience in the beginning because cleaning is new to you. As you grow in your job you learn what works and what doesn’t. I think true failure is when you quit and don’t work towards any goals.

This, making mistakes isn't failing, it's part of the process to becoming great

CrazyCoKids t1_jcfvi3f wrote

Even if you make a mistake sometimes that can get you not given another chance. But this is a very good way to put it.

Not at all , failure without getting back up leads to failing

The same way there's downwards spiral there's upward spiral and failing doesn't put you up

I think the missing part of this saying is having determination is how you overcome obstacles and put you in position for success. No one can be successful in anything without motivation. Giving up every time something challenges you is a defeated attitude.

No Dumb Questions podcast recently dropped an episode on Michael Jordan titled: Is Michael Jordan Happy.

Case in point: watch Michael Jordan's hall of fame acceptance speech. Would someone at the height of his career, success and popularity say what he said in his speech?

Although perseverance and motivation is important, I think Michael Jordan is unique in that he also embodies what it cost to reach such heights. The faustian bargain that he makes and the sacrifices along the way.
