'you lose some weight?' has never gotten me in any trouble.

obviously wouldn't ever say anything like that to a stranger. but never say anything about anyone's appearance? seems a little dramatic.

I agree with this. Some people will read this as rules for them to follow with friends and acquaintances, but for some reason it’s open-season for family members.

Someone told me at work I had lost weight and "looked good". The problem: I was not overweight before. I had severe appetite loss from meds and so got too thin. Im struggling to work on it and eat enough. I cant really fit into pants and mostly wear leggings. The comment fucked me up a while.

Basically, you dont know what health issues people might have. Its better just to not comment on people's bodies. If you want to just say they look good and leave it at that.

I made this mistake once and felt terrible. I just keep all comments to myself now.

Generally speaking, don't comment on people's bodies. Sometimes people lose weight for not-great reasons. Try, "Nice shirt!" or something you know they chose.

I made the mistake of sincerely complimenting a well toned girl on her "big calves" at a garden party. That did not go over well. One of my fondest memories.

I just rather not comment on people's appearance, unless it's complimenting them on a piece of clothing or an accessory. Complimenting them on their style, rather who they are. I dislike it when people comment on my appearance, particularly if I look tired.

Agreed! It’s nice to receive a compliment without needing to diminish it in any way! A simple, “you’re looking amazing” will do.

Never comment on what anyone looks like, not even to say something you consider to be flattering. Just don’t.
