Normal length ties never worked for me once I put some weight on. They either wouldn't come down far enough, or the back "tail" wouldn't be long enough to be tucked away neatly. You also won't need to cinch it around your neck as tight to get every extra millimeter. (plus, we tend to have thicker necks)
I hate wearing ties, and the extra weight made it worse because I felt like the tie didn't fit right and made me look even worse.
An extra long tie did wonders for me. I still hate ties, but now it's on principle, and not a comfort or image issue.

The real LPT: learn the right way to wear a tie and buy ties that fit.
Bonus life pro tip: tell older men in your family that you need ties. I got a box of ties when I was younger, and now I have a box of ties I could give away.
