Lever-up the edge with a regular tin opener. This breaks the seal, allows air in (reduces the pressure difference) and...makes the lid easier to open by hand.

While this is true, there are people who still have difficulty holding the lid regardless of the seal. Arthritis makes it hard for me and using something to improve my grip solves the problem. Though I've never used sandpaper.

I got the idea from a gift that was given out to people at a wedding I went to. It was just a smallish round plastic disc with a grippy surface. It worked great! But it fell apart and I tossed it. But that is what gave me the idea to use sandpaper instead.

Sorry to hear that. My mother has arthritis and struggles to open jars. I bought her a simple device that works a treat. https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/images/products/uppfylld-jar-opener-off-white-bright-orange__1124811_pe875267_s5.jpg?f=l
