Aren't there any cobblers in the neighbourhood you take new shoes to? Isn't it standard practice to have new shoes sewn up by these craftsmen for about ten per cent their price before you start using them?

Ahh, those were the days! But, seriously, getting new shoes sewn up is the one sure way to prevent the soles coming unstuck, trust me.
