LPT : Take care of your final prearrangements NOW. If you are being cremated or buried or entombed in a Mausoleum… whatever. please , Get it out of the way.

I highly recommend NOT burdening your family with those details or the expense. Even if you try to rationalize : “ oh I have a life insurance policy”.
You are still burdening them with the responsibility of the logistics and having to make financial decisions under emotional duress.

Preplan …., get a discount for preplanning , and that way you are leaving the most money to your loved ones instead of sticking them with a huge bill on the worst day of their life. It’s truly your final gift to them.

(USA) It’s also a good safety against future Medicare/caid claims and limits on assets if you’d end up needing certain government assistance later in life. Prepaying at a funeral home could/would be set aside with an insurance company and could/would be considered separate from any other assets you have.

Yep, and if you somehow manage to survive and end up in a bad state, your next of kin have some planning on what to do - when my dad had a stroke in 2019, the first thing I did was look at his advance directive to find out what I could tell his care team about his wishes.

Agreed. I had this happen to me. A family member passed away unexpectedly out of state and while my family was reeling from the loss, we had an absolute ton of work to sort out within a few days time.

That person didn't have a will, never mentioned their final wishes, whether to cremate/bury in a casket, donate organs, etc. It was a nightmare trying to guess what they would have wanted.

My grandfather passed recently and he had taken care of all of his final plans. Plots purchased, etc. We just had to email the funeral home some pictures and show up for the funeral. It was such a different experience.

My dad recently passed. I’ve told him for decades that whatever he wants he needs to prearrange and prepay and let me know. That if he does I’ll make sure he gets it as he wants. HOWEVER, that if he does not do this, then I’ll get him exactly what I want for myself which is whatever is the cheapest cremation, no viewing, funeral, burial etc. The bill came to $927.
