Paying the €54 debited my account by £47.62 (plus transaction fee which with my bank is pennies). Paying in £ would have debited my account by… £50. D:

The usefulness of the tip may depend as well. Some credit cards charge a 3% foreign transaction fee.

You are basically being asked if you want your bank to do the conversion to the foreign currency (by paying in the foreign currency) or let the merchant’s bank do it. 99% of the time, your bank will give a better rate.
