Keep your mouth closed while brushing and only use a pea size amount of toothpaste. I’ve done this my whole life for the same reason.

This. Also, when you put the toothpaste on the brush, apply it so you’re pushing it into the bristles. Prevents a blob of toothpaste from being spit out.
