Hey all, recently accepted at Maine law and I was just curious on everyone’s opinions on what it’s like being a young adult in portland. I am from rural northern Michigan and love snow/outdoors, but I also love socializing and meeting new people - going out to bars, seeing shows, dancing, etc. (currently living in Chicago). Now I know it won’t be like Chicago, but I am wondering if there is enough socializing and youthful energy in the city to keep me happy. Everyone online says it’s only old people lol

You’ll be fine. It’s definitely nothing like Chicago but there are tons of young professionals in Portland. Great emerging food scene, lots of fun bars, and cool bands are finally starting to play in Portland!

Sorry - I’m 25 and from rural Maine, not Portland. All I meant was artists I enjoy, like Big Thief, Sylvan Esso, and Phoebe Bridgers, are coming to this state when they only used to go to Boston.

Old people live up North. Southern Maine (with Portland as the hub) has a full array of age ranges and activities. Wife and I moved here when we were 25 and we haven’t looked back. Great place to live and raise a family. That’s assuming you can find housing of course.

I think Portland is exactly what you're looking for. There is plenty going on in Portland. The music scene here is pretty good. There are adult rec leagues that are great fun and a great way to meet younger active folks. We have a good bar scene.

Drive 1 hour north, and you have great fishing, hunting, hiking activities. About 2 hours north and your in ski country.

Obviously, we sit right on the ocean, so you will be very close to some great beaches and coastal state parks.

Portland is unique in that it has a city vibe with a small town feel. The arts thrive here, along with being one of the top "foodie" destinations in the US.

You will love it. Like any place, it's all in what you make of it that will determine your experience here.
