Howdy Mainers - So upwards of 1000 crows come in nightly around 5:45 PM to roost by the river; like they do every time this year, and the sky over the OhioSt@14th cemetery looks like an interstate at rush hour.

Did some 'googling' on the subject, and, w/too much time on my hands, decided to see if I could befriend one or two out of the flock. Meaning they recognize my car, me, like the peanuts they see me dropping and are curious enough to not panic and get closer.

Since dusk is a bad time to expect them to be enticed, today I took a sunday drive knocking around, following up river, traipsing between #15 and #221, to see where these birds squat in the daytime.

I found one cluster hanging near the Solar farm going up on #15 in Kenduskeag and another on #221 in Hudson; each w/about 100 birds or so. But that was it, they love the peanuts but I was expecting to find a lot more birds.

I'm planning for the long haul and expect their habits to change with the weather, but are any of you folk out that way seeing them overhead around 5-5:30PM ? Any clusters hanging nearby you?

From reading about them I know they travel upwards of 50 miles but I expected to see a lot more w/in 20-30 miles than i did.

Thanks for reading!

Didn't occur to me to search reddit for crow info.

I don't know about Bangor, but we have a similar situation in the mornings lately in the Capitol area of Augusta. When they are in the trees right outside my house, they will wake me up around 4:00 a.m. I don't want to describe what condition my car is in lately. Other clear mornings, I can hear them out somewhere else in the neighborhood. The rain this morning must have them seeking shelter elsewhere.

thanks for the reply and yea, i get that their presence in numbers like this are a (minor) disturbance to people near the trees; still an amazing thing to behold.

There's a reason they're called a "murder" of crows.

There is a VERY substantial murder in Waterville. I cant estimate how many there are but looks like hundreds upon hundreds. They like to sit on the roof at the Main St Hannaford and Walmart

Really impressive to watch, lotsa fun to coax w/treats! Do they all pretty much fly in from the same direction?

They like to fly back and forth from the Walmart roof to the hannaford roof. At dusk they sometimes move elsewhere and they completely block out the sky. I would love to make a special crow friend but I haven’t had time to earn their trust. Hoping a baby crow somehow ends up on my doorstep, that would be ideal!

I'm going to find out soon myself how long it takes for me and my car to be recognized and build trust w/a bird or two as a crowbro :)
