Hi there, Im from the midcoast area, was thinking about visiting some places I haven't really experienced in the offseason, Was wondering if anyone has experience with Vinalhaven? it is walkable to an extent ? things worth checking out?

Vinalhaven is barely worth checking out in the summer…

Is it really tourism if you already live in-state?

Don’t listen to these people. Come on over. When you get here scream “THIS IS MAINE AS FUCK!” Walk around punching the air screaming “THIS IS MAINE AS FUCK!” Barge into the general store like the cool aid man and scream “THIS IS MAINE AS FUCK!” Take a selfie with literally anyone and tell them you like to fuck. Do a T pose and scream “IS THIS MAINE AS FUCK!?” Trust me its a blast.

Vinalhaven is beautiful, but I would go in the summer. There are some nice trails, but it would be more fun in the summer. I wouldn't call the island really walkable. I mean, yeah, you can walk but you'll freeze your ass off and there's nowhere to go. There aren't many shop or restaurants. It's like Friendship, but with water all the way around it.

Save the day trip for the summer. For someone already from the Midcoast area, you won't be as awe-struck with the place as someone from another state to make going in the winter worth your while. (Not to mention, ferry cancellation is far more likely in the winter than summer.)
The summer is much more vibrant. Swimming in the quarries, hiking lanes island (either beach or trails), or visiting the flea market (Saturdays). Not to mention, your food options are far more varied in the summer.
I'd recommend bringing a car. The island is not to big, but it will help you fit the most into a single day.

I'd say the distances are more cyclable than walkable. If you want to make it out of town and reach other parts of the island, you could take a bicycle on the ferry.

There are quite a few trails on the island, you can see them all on an app called VHtrails

There are a lot of land trust parcels but VH is a big island. I would, at least, use a mtn bike, if not a vehicle.

The definition of tourism is pretty broad, and is pretty much any travel for over 24hr outside where you spend the day to day. It includes business travel too.

If you’re from away and you come for a looksee, that is inherently tourism
