+1 on the Estwing, they make a nice splitting hatchet with a fat wedge. Perfect for making kindling. Watch your fingers, straight from the factory they have a nice edge, and the mass makes even a small tap a bloodbath. (Use the typewriter above to describe the event in 3700 words.)

My 25 year old framing hammers are proof that you should. A 20 Oz. hammer and a Stanley Wonderbar are about the perfect gifts for a first time homebuyer. (OK, nobody buys a first home now...)
