Southern Mainer here. I need to visit the DMV in Topsham next week and would like to check out Harpswell and make a day out of it.

Any beach or restaurant recommendations in the Harpswell area you can recommend? Open to anything.

The fairy trails are beautiful but can be scary when icy so bring grippers. Lands end, giant staircase are beautiful to. Harpswell Heritage Land Trust has a list of trails on their website.

While in the area, head on down to Mackerel cove, one of the most photographed and painted sights on the Maine coast. You will have to travel over the renowned and world's only granite cribstone bridge in order to get there.

After the crib bridge is Cook’s Lobster House which has nice views. It’s open for lunch and dinner on Fridays during the winter. Beyond Cook’s is Mackerel Cove and then Land’s End (small beach, rocks, water, bronze statue of a lobsterman).

Brunswick has a bunch of great restaurants downtown and you will basically have to drive right through it to get to harpswell. we loved the Indian place (forgot the name, sorry!) If you decide to eat in harpswell, for sure call any restaurant first. The town basically shuts down in the winter for restaurants, or at least it used to when we lived in the area 10 plus years ago.

Maybe that is where we used to go? I just remember the Indian being super good, like even better than indian I've had in major cities.

Good to know, thank you. Any particular places in Brunswick you like?

"Wild Oats" is really good, it's like an upscale deli, has really good baked goods too. "The great impasta" was another fave, yummy Italian, garlic knots to die for. Those are ones I remember that are still around.

Wild Oats—has it moved to the base?

I think there are two locations, the usual place downtown and at the base?????? That was the case 10 years ago, they may have consolidated to just one, but they had 2 at one point for sure.

Need the best coffee, great grub, and a weird ass vibe? Dog Bar Jim is your friend. During the summer also doubles as an ice cream joint called Dirty Larry's Conetown

Watch "Blow the Man Down", to get a feel for the area (and the locals?), then try to hit as many filming locations as you can..giant staircase, cribstone bridge, and the restaurant on the other side is there, for instance.. great movie too!

2nd things listed here. Also Potts Point Preserve, you gotta park at the landing and then walk 10 mins down the street to the beach area. I’ve only been there in summer though, not sure how it is during winter. Other things listed are easier to access.
