This may have made sense 1-2 years ago. Not that NFTs weren't bullshit back then, people just hadn't realised it yet. Now it's just extremely embarrasing.

Nfts never made sense at all. All fake money, all based on other people's speculation of what constitutes "value" never actually based on the real world of economic scarcity and usefulness.

Everyone was saying the same thing about cosmetic/collectable items when they made their appearance in online games, but they seem to be still kicking around. Digital scarcity is a real thing, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Digital scarcity only matters within the context of the wider community. A limited edition digital charm or cosmetic pack means nothing if your electrical grid or water supply goes out.

Also, that digital token means nothing to anyone who doesn't care about that context. Ever tried describing why an $600 keyboard is better than a $100 barebones kit? The non community people won't get it and won't care if it doesn't affect them.

Doesn't mean it's not shit. I won't spend a cent on games using steam marketplace for example.

Terrible user experience. Remember when the game was about the game?

I'm not against cosmetics, I consider that part of the game if it's designed to be in the game. But these big companies only have their sights on how to extract the maximum amount of currency from their userbase. Sometimes this means targeting whales at the expense of everyone else. Or introducing gambling mechanics as the primary method of obtaining anything (such as crates).

No this shit isn't going anywhere. But it's still shit. As an individual, the best I can do is not participate.

Actually no. The technology is the hardware and infrastructure that is used to store the software or digital asset. The software could be described as the techniques to write a letter, whereas the value is in the infrastructure that holds the content or the NFT. An NFT is worthless if you do not have the technology that can display it or store it.

Yes. Isn't that what I said? If there's hype around the garbage it can still be used successfully for marketing though.
