not really their responsibility, they just manufacture whatever cad is sent to them. shame on the designers, sure, but the files are readily available and commission them often. zamol is just trying to show what materials they offer.

The unikorn files got shared without the permission of the owner, but yeah feel free to act like you don’t know.

I might be ignorant here but what is the difference between a bakeneko with a backplate and the korn design here? As far as I know we haven't seen the internal design?

If it's for personal projects and not to sell, is it so wrong that they copy the design? Genuine question

There's nothing wrong with clones right?

Are you even serious ? I swear people in this hobby became so dumb.

A lot of mechanical keyboard parts are basically like games that that are no longer published. It's hard to be mad at people for emulating when the companies don't make the products available.

Unikorns are still getting “published” though. Elaine from Singa specifically said that one manufacturer ran away with the design files from R1 und proceeds to manufacture and sell them, which is not only morally wrong, but also illegal. The pictures in this post are besides the engraving identical to unikorns, which makes them clones of a stolen design, and therefore quite literally illegal.

DigitalxDruglord t1_iu423ky wrote

From the looks of it, that is not the r1 design. From a moral standpoint yeah everyone will have their own opinion but thats definitely not the stolen r1 design

ICKitsune t1_iu6np7a wrote

A few of them definitely are R1 Unikorn designs - top left and top right, and bottom right have the exact same design as the R1 Unikorns.

Here's my R1 Unikorn, that looks the exact same as the three mentioned, minus the weight engraving

DigitalxDruglord t1_iu7y6q1 wrote

Since when unikorn r1 come with a jst cable and daughter board? Thats not even how the daughter board is mounted on even the r2 as you can clearly see from the images you yourself mentioned. Some one has tried to recreate the design but calming its the original stolen files is incorrect

Edit: also a lot of pictures you mentioned are simply the open source bakeneko. Smh

If they don’t want the make enough boards for people to buy then screw em. Bring on the clones!

Xanirah t1_iu7iac3 wrote

That's not how it works. Making "enough" is huge risk for individual people. The group buy model allows for designers to fund the manufacturing of a keyboard, but if there's a fuck up, that will take time and money, that on some cases can't be made up for with the profits made from the group buy. And so you can imagine what will happen if they decide to make a fuck ton of keyboards. so manufacturing smaller amounts is not unreasonable. It's not fun for everybody, but it's the only viable way of doing it for most designers

ForsakenWebNinja t1_iu7vmv0 wrote

Yea I understand how group buys work. When I say making enough I’m not talking about all at once. I take issue with the fact that they don’t usually continue with more rounds of group buys. If you miss the one group buy or you don’t get one of the limited available boards then you’re screwed.

It’s different if a company is actively making a product and clones take sales away from the original designer. But if the original designer is not going to make anymore then they aren’t losing money. Legal or not I’m fine with cloning in that situation because there’s no other way to get one.

Xanirah t1_iu8dj67 wrote

Yea i don't disagree 100%, but in this scenario they are still being made by the original designer

2

ForsakenWebNinja t1_iuaau3h wrote

Oh ok. I’m not familiar with this scenario. If the original designer is still actively selling them then that’s different
