Hitting the F keys on a layer is not hard at all, becomes second nature real quick, I daily drive keyboards smaller than OP's and I have a layer with F1 - F12 arranged in a 3x4 grid kinda like a number pad and I really like it.

Yeah I know, I just really like how this looks in the exact setup you have.

I don't think I'd be able to give up the extra keys, but this really makes me want to try lol
