I code for work. I use the Corne 42-keys, but have since modified my bindings for 36-keys outside of gaming.

You can remap using QMK and layers so each layer has a different layout. I have:

  • Alphas on Layer 0

Thumb cluster, from left to right are:

  • Tap Delete/Hold Layer 2

  • Backspace/Shift

  • Enter/Layer 1

  • Enter/Layer 3

  • Spacebar/Layer 4

  • Tab/Ctrl

  • Numbers on Right Layer 1(RL1), Ctrl+key and Alt on Left Layer 1(LL1),

  • Navigational keys on RL2, custom Symbol mapping on LL2 (I didn't map my symbols like they are on the number row, customized it based on how I think it should go)

  • Functions on RL3, Macros/combinational key press on LL3, togglers for gaming layers (Layer 5 and 6)

  • Numpad on RL4, Mouse keys on LL4

You can also search up Miryoku mapping for ideas.

I also code for work. Though I’m still using the full 42 keys on my Corne, I have a very similar keymap to the one described here.

Also chiming in to say, autoshift for numbers/symbols is very powerful on 40's and below, it has let me condense my layers on my QAZ while still remaining just as comfortable as before when I had two different layers for numbers/symbols and shifted symbols
