Poor girl. Hopefully they had the medicine when this picture was taken. Ducks canโ€™t hurt though

Today that device would be promoted as polio vaccine alternative.

How different it must have bee in the 1950's, these vaccines were being rolled out and made a huge difference to people's lives. I remember being at junior school with children in leg-irons because they'd had polio.

My mother was born after, but she's still of a generation that remember classmates never coming back, and suffering mumps. I had all vaccines as soon as possible, and she's taken all covid vaccines as soon as she could.

I remember the school nurse giving us polio vaccine shots at school in the late 50's. Small town memories

Polio had been successfully eradicated because of the vaccination. The vaccine was not necessary anymore because it was so well contained nobody was spreading it. That would never have happened today.

My brother, born 1944, got polio before the vaccine was available and had this type of treatment. He was "lucky" because it was a mild case. I wasn't born until 1964, so I only knew him after he was grown; and sadly not too long either. Died of a massive heart attack at 36 years old, due to the damage from polio.
