Best Places Near (But Not In the Limits of) Philadelphia?

Hello.

Looking to move to PA. I'd prefer to be near enough to Philly to commute in if I had to but I would very much not want to live within the city limits. What are good places that would fit that description. My GF and I are in our mid-30s and don't do much partying, nightlife, etc. We're homebodies. We'd prefer an apartment to a home; Idk if there's a drought of apartments in suburban PA like there is where I currently live.

here's a map from septa to help you narrow down your choices. I prefer mass transit because driving in and out of philly is kind of a nightmare lol

I think the bulk of Philly commuters live as far west as Montgomery County and into Reading, or as far north as the Lehigh Valley (Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton). Farther west and you're in PA Dutch/Amish country and farther north and you're in the mountains. I don't commute there myself, but I have friends that do in both those directions. Driving in from the west, and taking the train in from the north. There's lots of urban, suburban, and rural places all long there for whatever meets your fancy.

My sister lives in Glennside - really nice little town - the train station within walking distance and you can be in the city very quickly

I live in Bucks County (northeast of the city). There are a variety of low income towns as well as some slightly ritzier areas the further north you go. (I live in the southern tip, not ragging on any it.)

It's not the cheapest county to live in, but it's enough outside the city yet close to the city to meet your needs.

If I were in my 30s and looking to rent, I might try Newtown or Yardley first.

Try out by where Vanguard is past Paoli or Malvern in the outer Rt 30 corridor. There is new apartment construction off Rt. 29 in Devault, along with a Wegman's, Target, Wawa, etc. Easy access to 202, 30 and the Turnpike. All within the Great Valley School District. Commuter rail/Amtrak runs roughly parallel to Rt. 30 with stops in Paoli, Malvern and Exton.

I’m from Bucks county, like previous commenter. Its a great area. Are you looking to commute into the city daily? Drive or take train?

Other areas to consider Wynnewood, Ardmore, Narberth, and out to Villanova.

I'd go for Gladwyne, Villanova, Berwyn, Merion Station, or Chester Springs if I were you.

Apartments are probably scarce in those areas, also you named some of the priciest areas in the state.

Some parts of Delco are great.

Stay away from Chester and Sharon Hill/Darby area.

Media, Havertown, Drexel Hill, Wayne, Villanova, Bryn Mawr, and Broomall are all nice areas.

Look into Jenkintown, Abington, Roslyn. All near train stations, not much nightlife, sleepy little towns.

I'd recommend Conshohocken and Ardmore. Both have good restaurants, are close to Philly, and have apartment options and good public transit (Ardmore moreso than Conshy). I'd stay away from King of Prussia (which is not really close to Philly) and Manayunk, where the scene is much younger and the apartment stock is not great.
