The real id process is free. When I got mine it ended up costing $60 because I renewed my liscence and got a real id at the same time. I did not have to preverify at my dmv location it my very from place to place. Underneath is the real id website I tried initally to pre verify it stated that it was not needed. I went to the dmv with all the required documents and the whole process was around 25 minutes.

When I renewed my license back in May, I just brought the renewal form with me and the required RealID documents and got a RealID. It costs more, but it’s a one time fee. I went to KoP.

My passport is good for like 6 more years I plan on just using that instead.

The way I see it is the hassle of dealing with a lost/stolen passport is far greater than the inconvenience of updating your drivers license, so I opt to not travel with my passport when its not necessary unless I might decide to hop over to Canada/Mexico on a whim when visiting a place near the border.

I don’t keep it in my wallet going about my day to day. To my knowledge the only thing you need the real ID for is boarding a plane.

Still, not the world's most convenient thing. It's another important document to protect (from both theft and simple damage). It doesn't fit in your wallet where it's conveniently protected on your person. If it works for you, go for it, but personally I'd rather the ID I carry everywhere do as much as possible.
