You are misreading. It is not saying 55.7% of priests are accused. It is saying out of the accused priests, 55.7% have had one formal allegation.
If you read further down in the article:
"The product of the study, titled the John Jay Report indicated that some 11,000 allegations had been made against 4,392 priests in the USA. This number constituted approximately 4% of the priests who had served during the period covered by the survey (1950–2002)."
So, yes, not denying it's a problem, but it's incorrect to say 55.7% of priests are accused child molesters.

You are 100% correct - but I'd also like to point out that was just the Catholic church for that study. Let us not forget there are plenty of Evangelical, Mormon, and so on groomers. Let's look at the bigger picture shall we?

One problem with these numbers is that many of the instances in the Church have been covered up. In public schools this is not usually the case with the exception of a winning sports coach who they don’t want to fire. The numbers in the Church are likely higher than the reports
