Can't wait for the antivax cult to freak out about this.

The same people screaming "think of the children" are the same ones completely fine watching them die of preventable diseases

They are also fine with them being gunned down too

The Bible clearly states that God helps those who help themselves.

If those children don't want to be gunned down then they should had brought their own gun to school and protected themselves. Then by God's grace they'd still be alive.

Assuming they truly believed in our christ and savior Jesus F. Christ

"The unborn" are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don't resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don't ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don't need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don't bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike, they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. It's almost as if, by being born, they have died to you. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.

This story is bittersweet. She has an older sister with the exact same illness and is too far progressed in her illness for gene therapy to be successful.

You already know this is going to upset some religious person scared of humans "playing God"

t1_j8zf7lw wrote

It's only "playing God" with medical advances. Forced birth, death penalty for abortions, using young adults to kill muslims in other countries, all A OK.

Well god shouldn’t have fucked up in the first place, then.

I feel like being nervous about the potential abuses that could come with such technology is just as warranted here as it is for, as an example, more advanced AI's, regardless of whether someone is religious or not. That being said, this isn't an abuse and thus isn't really a problem.

Also left alone by the science freaks, cause I have to say, it would be a little bit cool to meet the first person saved by gene-therapy, and the team that made it happen ofc.

One cure for cancer please! Oh and migraines!

We have a "cure" for a cancer and people still don't take it

It's the HPV vaccine, that prevents infection from numerous papilloma virus strains responsible for cervical cancer and penis cancer, yet people don't vaccinated themselves because "my daughter will never be promiscuous and get HPV", or we "don't believe in that vaccine crap"

I just need to survive until they can cure me of all my shit and maybe, just maybe I can actually become a normal person who can go out to aquariums and parks without fear of my intestinal tract knotting up and spewing blood, or my heart stopping from too many panic attacks...

Small steps, I suppose. I guess we'll just have to settle for saving people's lives, currently...

Calling that eugenics is such a reach.

What are you talking about? Of course giving a young girl the opportunity to live is eugenics. They should just let her die /s

I had hoped that I wouldn't need to put /s after my comment, that the humor would've been apparent. I meant it as a joke "only saving lives" being the punchline, of sorts.

I meant it in the way that we live in a world where beauty and vanity are so much more important than actual important things. For example, teachers making tiny salaries for dozen have hour workdays, 7 days a week while celebrities and athletes make sometimes tens of millions a year.

My comment was supposed to be a joke. :*(
