I'm glad the US pressured Kagame to release him, even though I remain worried about his safety. Kagame is known to assassinate anyone who speaks ill of him, specifically those who challenge the prevailing genocide narrative.

The office of the presidency is a diplomatic position too. Doesn't matter who holds it, their responses matter when signalling US sentiment.

Other country’s leaders likely had their own response but the US generally doesn’t care about what another country’s leader has to say unless it’s controversial or directly related to the US
