I'm not one generally to look at a thing designed for one gender and demand complete equality in an otherwise largely gender-specific issue(e.g. women's shelters), but I struggle to see why this isn't a "keeping juveniles out of jail" instead of a "keep girls, the already minority group out of jails" thing.

Every comment mentioning non-girls is just a toss away that may as well be a parenthetical aside. There's even a part where they say that it could eventually be used to try to get boys out of jails as well. Maybe. Eventually. But getting girls out is the important thing.

The whole thing gives the vibe that boys in juvie deserve to be there but girls in juvie are just victims of society, which both frustratingly removes agency and similar accountability from the girls and shows a wanton disregard for the circumstances and fates of the boys.

It's a common theme in society, and often times so-called feminists and liberals advocate for this type of thinking: Men are capable of a thing called responsibility, but women are not.

It's something both conservatives and liberals seem to agree on, and it's one of the reasons why women get less jail sentences than men for the same type of crime. The disparity is so great that it even overcomes racial biases in the judicial system: a Black woman will get less jail time than a White man for the same type of crime.

If you read the article they also want to expand this to keep boys out of prison too.

They just found that a significant amount of girls were being put in prison for low level crimes which they had an opportunity to correct.

They way they did it is similar to the Big Brother organization as well, which let's point out doesn't focus only on girls.

Agreed and all these individuals complaining about how it should have happened I bet have not moved a muscle to help save a life. Let’s give credit where credit is due and if you have an issue and think you can do better off you go and do it yourself!

Nothing will change until "for profit" prisons are eliminated.

Most are not for profit, only 8% of the prison population is in a private for profit prison. What keeps the non profit prison growth and demand is private prison guard companies, construction contracts, etc etc. Plenty of people are making money on the prisons that don't exist for profit.

If the facility isn't for profit, but most of the companies running it are private/for profit companies, that's still a for profit prisons in my books.

Throw away kids are not going to becase productive members of society at the magical stroke of midnight on their 18th birthday. They become thwoawy adults. This is exactly what these kids need. Adults who care and not ones who want to throw them away. Amazing job!
