We had no idea if the atmosphere was thick enough to even support rotor flight. When that chopper left the ground, it was a huge moment for our understanding of our capability for interplanetary colonization.

They thought that, due to significant differences, it may not work at all. The fact that it is working better than intended, by orders of magnitude, is why it is wonderful news. It is being tested in new ways that will teach us so much about the Martian surface.
