It was even more terrifying when it reached the U.S. in 2014.

So there are no more active infections?
Or is Uganda similar to Russia in that they declare desires in the same way Michael Scott declared bankruptcy?
FrankTankly t1_j3xo9q4 wrote
No new infections reported in 42 days, which is twice the maximum incubation period of the Ebola virus.
Of course it’s impossible to be 100% certain there aren’t infections that haven’t been caught, but it seems reasonable to declare the outbreak over with the information they have.

If you ever want to read a great book about Ebola, I recommend reading The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
SafariSunshine t1_j40h4aa wrote
You don't learn as much about ebola, but the mini series based on the book is also very good.

Curious if any of y'all know then - What are the natural reservoirs for the virus that could bring it about again?
YourUncleBuck t1_j3zutmh wrote
Bats most likely. People gotta stop eating bats and probably other bushmeat as well.
Shackdaddy161 t1_j4a2iiz wrote
Bats? Ok, ok but what about pangolins? By the way, where's Randy?

Took more than 10 whole years but finally. I wish the same happened to COVID.
alphahydra OP t1_j40cnbe wrote
It's the end of a four month long outbreak in humans. Not the total end of Ebola, unfortunately (which has been around much longer than a decade), as there are natural reservoirs of the disease in animals.
The concern with this recent outbreak was it would run out of control and spread more widely than the usual range for Ebola, as happened with monkeypox. The good news is, it has now been contained and that's not going to happen. But Ebola still exists as a pathogen in the wild, and can pose a threat again in future.

I feel this. It seems like it ended a long time ago but in reality news and media will cover something heavily in the first few days-months until something new comes along. I'm fairly certain ISIS is still up to no good and the Syrian civil war is also still ongoing but it's all about the Ukranian conflict now, a conflict which I think more or less started back in 2014.
masonhil t1_j40sbem wrote
This is not the same outbreak from 2014 lol. There have been numerous smaller outbreaks since then. This one killed 55. Viruses mutate and it took a long time to create the vaccine.
