Mt. Rainier Highway Spring Re-opening

Hi All--

This may be an impossible question to answer, but....

I am planning a photo trip to Washington and Oregon in early May. I know that Hiway 123 is currently closed between Packwood and Highway 410. I know it's impossible to know when 123 might reopen due to the unpredictability of weather, but I wanted to see if anyone knows, from personal experience, when that approximately might be.

This will be my fourth trip to Washington, which is quickly becoming my favorite destination.

Memorial Day-ish for the road to Sunrise. But, the Ashford entrance is open year-round, and there’s two other entrances. https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/road-status.htm

Thanks! I think that's what I was seeing elsewhere. I was there in October and Stevens Canyon was closed for construction and of course now they have the snow to deal with. I stayed in Ashford but frankly would prefer to stay in Packwood, which has a little more going for it.

I may need to rethink my approach but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Road to Sunrise doesn’t usually open until early July. Last year was open on 7/1/22.

Ya, thanks for the catch. I had just read WSDOT’s notice about the nearby passes’ projected openings, got too excited 😆
