Hello /r/WorcesterMA,

There will be a discussion group meeting at Nu Kitchen, Mondays 5:30-7PM, starting tomorrow and for the next month as part of the Strong Towns local conversations program. If that sounds interesting please stop by!

We'll be discussing such topics as creating safe and productive streets for all users, land use and zoning policies, housing, quality of public transit, and how Worcester spends its money. We believe there are ways these and other things could change to better serve the people who live here and create a more vibrant city for all of us.

Strong Towns is a national group, but this is being started by people who live here, they don't give us money or anything.

What else would you like to know? We're just starting up so there's not a ton of depth to our specific initiative yet. However if you want to check out strongtowns.org you can see what they're about.

I love strong towns and was asking if maybe there is an email list for the Worcester chapter or like group chat where people can talk and ask questions

Oh awesome! Yeah we don't have that set up yet, I've been trying not to get ahead of myself. Currently our goal is just getting on the Strong Towns Local Conversation map, which I've already been in touch with them about, but we have to start meeting to get on there.

If you can't make it but want to DM me an email we will be gathering a mailing list for when we have more going on. We also had a Discord server prototype, might get that functional, I'll let you know if so.

We'd be super happy to see you there, and we'll be there at least for the next 3 weeks, Mondays 5:30-7PM. I put a little review below.

We covered some pretty good stuff this time including:

  • particular issues around the city, nonsensical streets, lack of bus shelters, pedestrian/cyclist danger zones, etc

  • getting a discussion board up and running

  • ways to keep up with Worcester happenings, sharing knowledge and resources

  • doing collaborative agenda building for next time where we can all bring up something at the beginning to discuss

  • building a shortlist of priorities to call city counselors about and otherwise advocate for
