Hi there,
Does anyone have info on resources for physical activity in West Baltimore-- I'm trying to create a Community Resource reference sheet that can be readily shared in a primary care clinic setting. The best I've been able to come up with for an indoor/year-round location is the Druid Hill Y, which seems a little peripheral, as well as some activities/classes at the University of Maryland Community Engagement Center.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I actually work with a small locally run community center in Mt. Clare called Clay Pots. We're at the corner of Pratt and Mount. We have free yoga weekly on Thursdays and in the past we've hosted a walking group, just need a new group of interested people to get it started again.

We have a website that has info but you can also find us on Facebook.

Other than us, the other place to look in Southwest would be Bon Secour/Grace Medical. They do a lot but I'm not super up to date on what they offer at the moment.

Also, Hollins Market has a bike riding group that does meet ups and group rides, I think all of that info is on the Hollins Roundhouse Neighborhood Association Facebook page.

Good luck!

The Druid Hill Y is probably your best bet for something year-round with broad choices of physical activity.

Beyond that, I would investigate the city rec centers and see if any of them offer exercise programs. I get the feeling that they do, but the city website is unhelpful in figuring out which site offers what.

As far as swimming goes, I know there's an outdoor pool in Druid Hill Park, and I believe there's another in Sandtown-Winchester, though they're both closed in the winter. Friends in southwest Baltimore say you can take swim lessons at the Vivien Thomas Medical Arts Academy in Franklin Square, but I don't know if their pool is open to the public beyond that.

The Druid Hill Park pools are brand new and really nice! There's appropriate spaces for all ages and access for disabled folks. And the music is dope too.

Are you looking for like, activities?

Park Run is a free, weekly timed 5k that takes place on Saturdays in Leakin Park (Winan's Meadow area) year round. You do have to register with Park Run to get an ID barcode (used for giving you your time), but that's it. You do not need to be a runner to do Park Run, they will always have a mix of runners, walkers, run-walkers, etc.

Middle Branch Fitness and Cahill Recreation Center are two city run gyms with pools. They are more south Baltimore but they are city run facilities that are newly renovated and very cheap to access.

Mission Fit may be a helpful resource depending on your audience and the exact location. It's not exactly west, but offers free fitness classes and gym access for youth. They also have affordably priced drop in classes for those outside of the age range they serve.
