I am a vegan and I live in Baltimore. I have a friend who is not a vegan visiting next week. I know about the vegan and vegan friendly spots in town (or I think I do). I'd like to take her out to a very nice dinner somewhere that has legitimate vegan options. I do not go to most restaurants that don't actively advertise having vegan options so I'm probably sleeping on something. What do you guys recommend?

Indian/Nepalese and Ethiopian restaurants always have great vegan options. Usually not advertised bc it’s just kinda how most of their common foods tend to be anyway.

I like Ambassador Dining Room for a fancier setting that’s still pretty casual

Ethiopian is definitely a great choice.

It's interesting, the menus almost always offer a "veggie combo" or "veggie platter" or something to that effect. But part of the reason for that is the prevalence of "fasting food" in Ethiopian cuisine, which is normally served on various fasting days in the Ethiopian Orthodox church calendar, when consumption of animal products is proscribed.

Put "fasting" in quotes because I always end up stuffed lol

Great food, poor service every single time I go there or to double 0 next to them

Would you be willing to elaborate? I’ve been planning to go there near the end of the year. Are the servers poorly trained? Apathetic? Unknowledgeable?

Just extremely slow. A few times we didn’t receive silverware and had to ask multiple times for it. Once or twice we were trying to get the waiter’s attention but he spent the better part of 10 minutes talking with a colleague and never once turned around. Even when there’s nobody else in the restaurant it can be slow. The food is delicious though.

One resource you might use, whether for Baltimore or anywhere (worldwide), is happycow.net (https://www.happycow.net). It will help you find vegan restaurants, restaurants with vegan/vegetarian options and markets. It includes ratings and comments.

We just went to Verandah in Hamden. I thought it was solid for vegan and non vegan options
