Unless there was an initial injury - low back pain, or chronically tight QLs, are typically a result of an imbalance in the hips. As a result, the muscles around the hips (glutes ESPECIALLY) need to be addressed; tight hip flexors are also typically associated with tight QLs; hamstrings and inner thigh muscles should also be addressed, at the very least stretched. With massage, like most things, you're going to get what you pay for. I wouldn't rely on a student to resolve your issue.
