Any suggestions to get BGE to turn the gas on for a former vacant property?

Hi All-Have been rehabbing a house in Pigtown that has been vacant for 10+ years. The work is permitted and work was done by the book. At this point, just need BGE to turn the gas on from the street. The property has the gas meter installed and the "designer" has asked for photos of the basement, which was provided weeks ago but no movement.

I've emailed and called but no luck yet. Anyone have any other luck to get BGE to assist?

You have to get the home inspected first before they will turn gas back onto the home. Once you have a green light BG&e will turn it back on. That includes their metering equipment. They're not going to turn your gas back on until they know it's safe to do so.

Totally get that, but I can't get them to even inspect. They have only asked for photos that the area is cleaned out (it is) and then crickets from BGE. Or do you mean the city needs to inspect?

When I moved into my current (rental) it took a while to get BGE to switch the billing over. Apparently in their system the house had needed inspection, somehow they thought it burned down. Just had to keep calling until I got to someone who understood the situation.

The home needs to be inspected by an independent/licensed inspector or tradesman. When I flipped a home, BGE wanted a licensed electrician to sign off on the work and provide their license number and any permits pulled. Then, BGE will come out and check the work. The work needs to be inspected by BGE before they will let the juice flow.

If I follow what you're saying, you gave the info to the designer but they haven't followed up with you yet to get it inspected? I had that issue when I converted to gas; the designer (I forget which engineering company was contracted at the time to spec/etc but the designer was not a BGE employee) was incommunicative so I ended up calling BGE directly to explain the situation and asked for their help. The designer's manager called me within a couple of days to apologize and we got the inspection scheduled. So, you may have to go over the designer's head. In my case it was BGE that was actually really helpful in getting it moved along. Not sure where your bottleneck is, but hope it gets straightened out soon.

Whoever pulled the gas permit should be the one to ask them to do it.

Service might need to be renewed from the main to the meter. Should be no charge to you but it's a timely process untill the contractor picks it up.

If the property has been vacant that long, they wont turn it on until it's been pressure tested for leaks.

What did BGE say when you called them?
