Has anyone read this book? I purchased it at Barnes and Noble a week ago on a whim, and it is simply fantastic. It tells the story of Thomas Dean Mütter, a doctor who revolutionized such things as bedside manner, anesthesia, and sterilizing surgical tools. It is an incredibly fascinating read, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in history, biology, or a good story in general.

I'm local to the museum! Confirm it is named for the same Mütter.

Yes, it is and was the reason I picked it up and read it to get the bigger story of how the museum came to be. Great story.

I always thought plastic surgery was a modern, 20th century thing. Fascinating to read it was done that long ago WITHOUT ANESTHESIA!
Mutter was famous because he was ambidextrous and could work quickly, thereby lessening the torture. I wonder if the doctors back then had to draw their own pictures of 'before and after' patients?
Absolutely loved this book!

This is right down my alley! By chance, is he the same Mütter the museum is named after?
