My disappointment with Daisy Jones and the Six

I’ve gotten back into reading after a few years of not picking up a book. Today I finished a book in a day but I still felt underwhelmed by the end of Daisy Jones and the Six.

At first, the writing style seemed intriguing and I like the choppiness of switching between characters. After a while though, it felt like lazy writing but I stuck through it for the entertaining aspect of the book (I won’t say plot because there wasn’t much of one). Just when I began to like a character or find out more about them, the focus went back to Billy and Daisy - yes this was probably the point and highlights the dynamic of the band but it was like the author wrote this knowing it would be adapted into a show.

Lastly, the breakup of the band was built up from the very start of the book and it was just anti climatic! The storyline was cliche and the dysfunctional-star-of-their-day-who-actually-feels-lonely is overdone. It’s not new and there was nothing exciting about it but I stuck with it, hoping it would get better. I liked finding out who was narrating/interviewing but that’s about it. I might give the show a chance but it does seem like something which has been done before.

I really liked it but I listened to it on audiobook. Different actors read each character. It was very entertaining. Maybe I would not have Loved it if I read it.

i just don't think taylor jenkins reid books are for me. i listened to the audiobooks and although it enchanced the experience of the book and i didn't care for the characters in the end and daisy annoyed me the most (i really wanted to like her in the beginning but ¯_(ツ)_/¯)

This was a DNF for me- I think as other commenters suggest I would have liked it better on audiobook but as it was I suppose I felt as if I’d rather actually read a behind-the-scenes of a real band, since like you said, it seemed to just be using cliches from real stories of bands and I wasn’t particularly invested in any of the characters.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoying the writing style. It was so different and great listening to with a full cast. I had high hopes for it, but I agree with you that it was disappointing. It was definitely anticlimactic. I was hoping for a better ending.

Have you ever watched an episode of VH1's Behind the Music? It was a documentary series that was very popular in the 90s. I don't know for sure, but I would bet money that Reid was inspired by it, because this book felt like an extended episode of it. As such, I experienced quite a bit of nostalgia as I was reading this and therefore loved it. But my larger point is I don't think it was lazy writing at all. I think what she was doing was very intentional.

Yeah I absolutely agree with this, listening to the audiobook definitely gave me this impression and was part of the reason I loved it so much, as I love music documentaries like that

Book was hot garbage. The pov was written by somebody who did very little research about musicians. The characters were lifeless, the dialog was flat. In my case, it was reading somebody's very poor draft of a book.

It felt like she wrote it knowing it was going to be adapted into a television show, so deliberately didn’t add any thing descriptive, just dialog
