I think the book is amazing. It’s very modern in tone and execution, and he creates an entire sub-genre intact and complete, right down to the details of what is now vampire lore.
And yet this cowpoke is poking around, wanting to poke Lucy, then being the Bowie knife wielding man of action. Perhaps he was originally created to be a conduit for vampire bat information, or perhaps he is just a product of his times, and Stoker was trying to broaden the books appeal. But nowadays he has that ‘custom character in a cut scene’ feel.
No spoiler tag, the book is from 1897.
