Not having to pay taxes makes it absolutely worth it. If you buy enough, the amount you save in paying the tax and fees can almost make up for the cost of getting the card.

The medical dispensary discount offers can also make up for the license fee in a single visit.

TDKevin t1_iueo6iw wrote

Almost? You dont have to go many times to surpass the cost of the card in savings, they're not very expensive. My girlfriend has hers and pays way less/gets better deals than when I go to a rec disp.

Less mod interference there but not nearly as big.

I believe there’s no tax on medical cannabis, so depending upon how much you typically spend, there could be some savings there. Most places have products that are excellent quality and only available for medical. Also, most dispensaries offer considerable discounts for new patients (e.g., $200 credits). If you were to get a medical card at a discount (many dispensaries run promos… I got my card for half the normal price through Revolutionary Clinics), it might be especially useful.

26

KayakerMel t1_iue6v4v wrote

Correct - no tax on medical cannabis. It's also been very helpful because my partner is listed as my caregiver on my medical card, so she can easily pick up anything for me.

3

tryptakid t1_iuddvh6 wrote

No shade to OP but it's so ridiculous that the choice about whether to obtain medical treatment is motivated by finances almost solely.

We call it medical cannabis, but there's no treatment. It's a tax coupon permission slip, but it's also an indicator subconsciously that you are taking a medication for some arbitrary condition.

tele23O7 t1_iudlymq wrote

years ago when MA adopted medical weed everyone said "oh we won't be a joke of a process like CA"......... turns out its the exact same joke. anyone can walk in with a straight face and say you have anxiety or trouble sleeping or some back pain and as long as you pay the fee there is 0 push back

19

hamakabi t1_iudzroo wrote

you don't even need to walk in, you can do a 'telehealth' screening that takes 5 minutes. It's basically a bribe.

tele23O7 t1_iue45hi wrote

its a 3rd party for profit company. not real doctors, no connection to the state or government (that we can see)

2

tryptakid t1_iuera2x wrote

And what's bad about that is you have the mindset that this is a treatment for a condition (as opposed to viewing it as a drug you like). It is much easier to minimize stuff like side effects or taking tolerance/mental health breaks because 'I need this' is different than 'I enjoy this'.

Don't get me wrong, I love drugs and support people's freedom to make choices around their use. I just wish people would find ways to get their care providers involved if using it for 'medical' reasons.

3

tele23O7 t1_iues4rz wrote

they can if they want to, nobody is stopping them , there is just no requirement to b/c its a money grabbing thing

2

tryptakid t1_iuge0fe wrote

I will say that on the other side of it, healthcare can be a bit more open about how they (we) work with people who use substances.

2

charons-voyage t1_iuey8tu wrote

Well, it’s hard to tell if OP has a medical condition or just wants cheaper pot. This is why the field is a joke, though. You can just say you have anxiety and get your card. It’s complete bullshit and it’s ultimately doing a disservice to patients who actually benefit from the medicinal properties of pot.

It’s fine if you wanna “self medicate”. No judgment. Or if you just wanna get ripped with your buddies and play video games that’s fine. But don’t get your medical card to do that.

Honestly, I wonder if too many people gaming the system means that medical cards end. If no one is regulating them really and the government starts seeing a dip in those sweet sweet revenues, what's stopping them from ending no tax on medical weed?

1

pepperjack87 t1_iuddusw wrote

yes. definitely worth it. The first time discounts are amazing at some places. No 20% tax. Also you can use the card up in Maine.

18

undercoverballer t1_iuj1l1t wrote

Maine is well worth the trip. I get all my edibles there, it’s about ¼ the price of Boston edibles. Even since the Boston pieces came down a bit the past year.

1

tele23O7 t1_iudlm3s wrote

its like ~20% extra tax for recreational so that will most likely pay for the $150 or so cost of getting the sham "medical" card, you don't even need to see your real doctor, just someone sitting there reading a paperback and signing everyones forms.

Some random downsides of being in "the system" like you might not qualify for a gun license

12

greyrabbit12 t1_iudr570 wrote

I’ve this to everyone. If you buy cannabis even once a month is totally worth it. You literally get like $100 rebate at every dispensary when you get a new card. Just that is insane. If you hit 5 places you saved yourself $500. Then add in saving $20 on every $100 you spend. You make up the cost of the card by spending like $500-$1000 depending on your price at the referral.

Diarrhea_Mouth27 t1_iuddcf2 wrote

A new med card is like $200 for the first year. Tax is 20% of the order. If you buy atleast $100 worth of weed a month it makes sense too. Plus they also have way more deals on the med side than rec side

Harpua111 t1_iue732w wrote

I renewed my card last month for $75 online through a place in Florida who sent a special offer to me through sira naturals somerville. I jumped on that deal asap and i only had a week left to renew lol

FWIW getting a medical card will prevent you from ever legally owning a firearm. - until the federal government fixes the laws at least.

I'll be getting the card, have a telehealth appointment Wednesday. Thanks everyone!

3

donkadunny t1_iudnznp wrote

Yes! No taxes and new patient/recertification deals the dispensaries offer more than subsidize the price of the med card.

2

Tatumisthegoat t1_iudpdx7 wrote

It costs about $100. Taxes are like 20%. If you think you spend $600 on weed in a year it pays for itself. Also, some dispos are med only and have certain deals for med

2

deegofuego t1_iudtb3l wrote

It's absoutly worth it, between first time patient discounts to discount savings . Then if your one who dosent mind driving a tad a med card opens the Maine medical scene to you and it a million times better than Masss.

As for quality there is no difference between a 1/8 you purchase rec or med it will be the same product and su ject to same testing.

1

Harpua111 t1_iue68rk wrote

Yes, it basically pays for itself the first purchase, and it will give you a bunch of discounts, no tax and you will be legally allowed to grow your own . Just choose a good dispensary

1

CoolAbdul t1_iuf73w2 wrote

Do the medical dispensaries sell the plants for growing your own?

2

Harpua111 t1_iufdzgl wrote

No, not in Massachusetts, not Yet at least. There are local seed banks you can order from online or grow a bag seed, (seed found in your weed). Lots of lessons on you tube and reddit communities.

transferStudent2018 t1_iue87pb wrote

Yes. Tax is one thing (I think it’s like 20%, maybe higher) but the real value is in the deals – it’s illegal in MA to offer any sales to recreational customers

1

DistinctBook t1_iuf0vok wrote

A judge ruled that having the medical card that pot is a legally prescribed medicine. This means you are covered under HIPAA and cannot be fired or denied a job for testing postive

it’s actually not just be smart with how u buy ur shit i’m from rhode island drive to boston or Fall river and get my stuff just walk in to a dispensary show my Rhode Island ID and they let me purchase if taxes are really the problem i’m sure u know someone that knows a plug that can hook u up a trust worthy person tho i mean you’re better off going to the dispensary when they have sales and really who cares about the taxes because it’s better then getting arrested “A 6.25% sales tax, which goes to the state's general fund, the transportation authority, and the school building authority. A 10.75% state excise tax, supporting the state alcoholism administration and the Cannabis Control Commission.” The dispensary near Micro Center has very good deals try them

You clearly don't have a medical need, so go buy retail pot.

Medical cards are for people with medical needs.

−11

EntireIndependence16 t1_iudeysm wrote

I don’t think this is fair, you can have a treatable condition and still not know anything about medical weed… asking if a card is worth paying for vs just going to the dispensary and getting it without a med card is a pretty valid question

6

sweatpantswarrior t1_iudw4to wrote

Those could be valid, but he's asking about pricing and quality. If what you say is true here then at best OP is self-medicating.

Recreational cannabis is just fine. I'd even say it is great. I lived in Vermont for quite a while and indulged all the time.

I just think that what OP is trying to do is gaming the system so things are special just for them.
