A friend and I are trading gifts and mentioned they would like something like that, I'm out in Metrowest and am wondering where I might be able to find such a thing in the city, because I'm sure not finding it out here.

Agree. Those two shops have a lot of nice Japanese gifts and housewares and groceries between them.

A dish set would go well with a super fancy aged soy sauce or something as well.

Super 88 market in Allston.. Got myself 2 different sets of cool decorated bowls (fish and leaf/ flowers) and awesome ninja painted chop sticks for really cheap.
