I’m visiting and will have just 1 day to get a feel for the area. I’ve never been to New England or Boston. I was thinking of driving up to Mt Washington and seeing some New England nature?

Is that a good idea or is the day best spent in the city? Or are there better day trips from Boston?

Spend the day in Boston. It's a 5-hour round trip (most of which is on an interstate highway) just to get to the base of the Mount Washington auto road. It's fun, but I don't know what season you're coming in, and if you haven't seen Boston before, definitely spend the day in Boston.

Go to the North End, Beacon Hill, Faneuil Hall. You feel like you are on a movie set…..

Mt Washington is great, but don't waste your one day driving. Walk the Esplanade, Common, freedom trail, beacon hill, harbor walk. Get some seafood, especially clam chowder and lobster roll. Visit the USS Constitution and Cassin Young, Bunker Hill is nearby if you want to check that out.

WHEN will you be doing this? Because if it's any time soon, you can't drive the Mount Washington auto road at this time of year. Also it's a 2 1/2 hr drive without traffic from Boston to Mount Washington.

If you must get outside of Boston I’d recommend Cape Ann on our North Shore. Easy drive that’s less than one hour. Plum Island, Essex, Ipswich and Rockport for seafood, birding, the ocean etc.
