This is why I unsubbed heaps of news and politics subs. I now view subs like r/mademesmile r/goodnews. In addition I stopped other social media and stopped watching and listening to most tv news. The amount of my feeling down just decreased massively.

More of them:

/r/wholesomememes /r/aww /r/randomkindness /r/examplesofgood /r/HappyCrowds /r/BeforeNAfterAdoption /r/FeelsLikeTheFirstTime /r/PupliftingNews

My subs are indeed curated to be more positive but somehow someone's twitter hot take screenshot still gets through no matter the sub. And even positive news "girl got out of rubble after 6 days" can sometimes cause anger because you're reminded of the corruption and greed that caused the building to collapse in the first place.

I chosen to do r/all to analyze what people generally see on the platform pushed by algos.

GreatStateOfSadness t1_j8o89a5 wrote

That's what I've found with so many feel-good subs like /r/upliftingnews. "Child Starts Lemonade Stand to Pay for Classmates' Lunch Debts" is only a small bright light in an otherwise needlessly bleak situation.

roadtotahoe t1_j8p2ek7 wrote

Yep I unsubbed from that one and mademesmile because the vast majority of the stories are actually terrible and symptoms of a corrupt society.

Are you 8? The fact that everything has a price is surprising and upsetting to you huh?

−3

Yathosse t1_j8pi2ap wrote

Yes? It is indeed upsetting that children have to go into debt to eat.

2

TugboatChamp t1_j8pnsrz wrote

This take is so childish and economically illiterate it's difficult to know where to begin. Do you take issue with the fact that parents are the party primarily responsible for providing for their children? Or do you resent the fact that valuable things have value?

2

Yathosse t1_j8pqeuw wrote

I do take issue with this but luckily where i live cafeteria food in schools is heavily subsidized and provided for free if you are poor. And yes, i do think a society should not let someone starve merely because they are too poor to afford food and i‘m lucky that‘s not how it works here

2

TugboatChamp t1_j8ptbyl wrote

Well we agree on that. In the US school food is heavily subsidized and provided for free if poor. And a kid using some ambition and hard work towards a charitable end is exactly the definition of society not letting someone starve. Although no one starved in the story, nor was there any real danger of that even if this commendable kid hadn't decided to help. So in summary, you get upset when you read a story that perfectly illustrates the type of society you desire to live in? Or does individual motivation and charity bother you instead of it being handled by a cold, inefficient bureaucracy thereby absolving and demotivating individuals to ever elect to act charitably or selflessly? Or possibly it bothers you that there are parents that are so selfish they would shirk their basic responsibilities to provide for their children's basic care? If the latter, then yes, I would agree is disheartening.

Don’t you feel like hiding the depressing subs is just kind of a head in the sand situation though? For me I feel shitty reading bad news, but then I also feel shitty avoiding it. Womp

kemh t1_j8oomah wrote

For me, it's a mental health issue. I have to "hide my head in the sand" to some extent, otherwise the likelihood increases that I'll finally decide that nothing is worth it anymore.

6

Onesie13 t1_j8p7psj wrote

Sure but if you're only viewing sad/bad news from selected subreddits then it's easy to conflate that with the normal or assume it's happening more often and it could just be a rare select one off.

Shouldn't stick your head in the sand but I wish the amount of good/bad news is proportional to what is happening in the real world but sensationalism gets more clicks which also means more hot/top threads.

extra_specticles t1_j8prbrn wrote

I don't feel shitty stopping having shit things put into my life. I only have one life and a certain number of clicks. I don't want to be wasting them on knobends.

I have noticed that I feel more inclined to comment on reddit when I disagree with something, or feel that a statement needs correcting. I also will want to make other comments (like providing advice, or useful info, or agreeing), but lately I have tried to fight the urge to go down the internet argument road. It almost never changes a mind or leads to a good place.

I think that limiting time on social media would just be good for everyone. There are great communities and great resources, but so often it just leaves me with negative feelings.

LegendOfDrizzle t1_j8nulue wrote

That’s too bad! You should probably either hide a bunch of subs that are bringing you down or just stay off “Popular.” I hardly ever see anything that upsets me on “Home” 🤷🏼‍♂️

Negative posts get better engagement, which means they rise to the top. This is the case across most social media/normal media. Cut social media out of your life and observe how much happier it makes you

kitkat_tomassi t1_j8oxxn2 wrote

As well as all the advice about curating your subs, I've had a lot of success with some well chosen content filters in my reddit app as well.

There are things that I absolutely do care about, but I'm not in reddit for those things, so while I have my reddit time they can get hidden. My list includes stuff like 'China' since there seemed at the time to be hundreds of posts about Chinese surveillance. 'Net neutrality' was hot for ages - I'm in the UK. Recently I've added 'Bing', 'ai' and 'opengpt'.

Stuff comes off my list too. While there was insane speculation about Lionel Messi changing clubs a few years ago I blocked 'messi'. But that's off the list now.

Also block trolls and particularly toxic users.

Make the space what you want it to be by removing some of the bits you don't want. Unfortunately you can't easily filter out videos of tiktok posts or twitter scree shots.

So much negativity on social media..its really brought me down the past week. Evil billionaires are gonna love forever soon, automation is gonna make majority of people unemployable and said evil billionaires will just take everything for themselves like they have been for all of history. People are gonna be destitute and hopeless crushed under an immortal wealthy iron fist...and climate change is gonna fuck us on top of all this....canada is barely getting a winter this year...never in my life have I seen anything like this...so where is the hope? Seriously someone help me out here! The future feels completely hopeless...

It would be interesting to also record the subreddit of each post, to see if there is any correlation between certain emotions and certain subs.. that way it could be easier to weed out the "negative" subs if you were so inclined.

NecrisRO OP t1_j8qwbem wrote

Anything news or from twitter is negative. I honestly do no see Twitter as anything else but a pleague on human mind, at least what makes it from there to Reddit. Social commentary oversexualizing everything also made it in the cringe / sad categories.

Feel good were almost all animals showing unconditional love.

Yeah, I've had this problem as well. Part of the issue is, I really like reading and talking about "the issues of the day" (politics, etc.). But it's hard to find an online community that meets all the requirements I'd have to feel good about engaging, like:

  1. mostly respectful

  2. relatively optimistic in terms of looking for solutions rather than simply venting about how terrible the world is

  3. willing to listen to arguments and ideas that don't match their own

  4. Not so far away from my own positions that we simply cannot communicate productively (e.g., there's only so much time I can spend arguing with even well-meaning and polite objectivists)
