The bubbles/clusters around certain weights immediately told me this sport had a weight class even though I don’t know a lot about it. My point is, even if it’s smoothed, you can still see the weight classes.

Oh sure, but without the smoothing youd see clifs.

yeah using a ruler I'm getting the mid point of the Taekwando bulges at 80, 70, 60 and the classes are 58, 68, 80 so the violin plot is almost certainly smoothing (which I'm fine with as otherwise the chart wouldn't be visually pleasing)
Interested to know what the tiny bulge in Taekwando is just above the 58kg peak

I think the bottom three classes are very visible.
The highest weight class has no upper limit, so I think what we're seeing is genetic differences in muscle gain and people who have been in the sport for different amounts of time as gaining mass takes time.
For example, Tyson weighed in at 212 for his pro-debut at the age of 18. In 2001, when he was 35, his fighting weight was 240.
