I'm trying so hard to get it. Is it some commentary about cats hiding in trees from dogs? Why are they a tree trimmer? What are the squirrels angry about? Is this just next level evolved metaphysical comedy I'm too stupid to understand?

Cats often climb on trees. They could climb down or just jump, but often, they act like they are afrait.
People notice them, and try to climb the tree and rescue the cat, or call the firefighters to come with their ladders.

In the end, happily climbing a tree, but then act afrait when they should go back is a typical cat thing! :)

Pretty sure the female squirrel was cheating and got caught, the one she was cheating with got chased out by her partner. (I prefer this one) Or if you want the explanation to be more PG then it could be that the daddy squirrel got scared because there was a cat outside the house and ran away leaving the mother and baby on their own.

It's okay. I get the whole cat stuck in a tree but it took me a minute since it's usually the fire department that handles that...I guess you could still dial 911 for them. The side squirrel bit was great though.

Those are some thicc branches to cut with shears.

My first impression was that the squirrels were running away because they realized that if the branches can be cut like that, the tree is rotten and about to fall down.

Depends.
In the first place: No, it has nothing to do with the joke!
In the second place: It is the reason the cat did climb the tree. The title could not be "Poor Career Choice" if the cat had climbed the tree for are reason that is unrelented to the cats job!

My aunt is an emergency services dispatcher. She likes to say ‘I understand there’s a cat stuck in the tree, but when’s the last time you saw a cat skeleton in a tree?’ Their fire department does not respond to cats in tree calls.

My brother works for animal control. He gets a lot of calls about cats "stuck" in trees.

His favorite response is "have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?"

Yeah, that’s the throw off for me. Makes it all about trimming the tree and ends up having absolutely nothing to do with what’s happening. Everyone here is just, “aww, cat! Cuuute!”
