Jokes on them. I abandoned it about 14 months ago. VR still sucks, we need a massive overhaul for it to be anything more than a gimmick to show your dad for 20 minutes.

This guy vr's. I've enjoyed a couple 3d movies as well, but sim racing is definitely where it's at.

VR is great, I still use my OG Vive. Meta sucks though.

Exactly, most good games still require PCVR though. Like Half Life Alex, Boneworks, and imported games like Skyrim VR, Half life 2, No-Mans Sky VR, etc....

It’s great fun for showing to your family for 20 minutes though.

I actually got enough joy out of passing It around to fam and never playing again that it made it worth it to me I think.

Standalone quest 2 VS using a PC are 100% different experiences. Also discovery for what you like can be hard. There are games on quest that let you play every cod map ever made and halo maps as well. Really depends on what you are looking for but the store makes it so hard to find.

Not to mention that you’ll be spending money on every app. I understand there are some free apps but there like 10 in total everything else is 10$ min. But I get it the market is new and innovation isn’t cheap!

The biggest problem for me was how shallow the games were and usually 10-20$

Funny enough the free games are some of the best experiences. There are some damn good $20-$40 games but 9.99 are all standing in place stuff. Not for me. I enjoy shooters.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Most of the VR games I bought were disappointing (especially Skyrim), and the game that I enjoyed the most was a stupid tie-in thing for one of the spiderman films that I downloaded for free.

Skyrim just like any other PC game you definitely need to mod for it to feel like an actual VR experience. If you play half life Alex, it will ruin all other VR experiences for you. There is a game called the grim Lord that is coming out and it will be a souls like experience. And there is a game called contractors on quest, two standalone and PC that will allow you to play halo call of duty and many other Mabs from the late 90s and early 2000s. And another shooter is called Pavlov. This will let you play call of duty zombies and some other game modes as well. Also, it has all of the maps from 007 goldeneye which is pretty cool. All these maps are modded and re-created by the community.

In the late 80s or early 90s, I remember someone having a Nintendo Power Glove and using it in a neat little VR game to show their dad for 20 minutes.

30 years later...

There is this neat headset you can wear and show this neat VR game to your dad for 20 minutes.

30 years later....

There are these neat underwear you...

I have a quest 2. It’s fun and all, but it mostly sits on the shelf. It’s kind of neat to cast it to the tv and play beat saber when we have guests, but that’s about it.

It’s insanely uncomfortable to wear for more than 20 min, and hurts your eyes too.

VR isn’t there, and I’m not sure it will ever be, except for niche applications. We’re surely not jumping into “the Metaverse” any time soon.

aVRAddict t1_j3x87pg wrote

Nah you just don't know what you're doing. People are already in the metaverse it's called VRchat and I know people who spend 12 hours a day in there with 10000 hours played. People even sleep in VR.

You're talking about the vast minority of the population that Meta needs to adopt this technology to make it in any way lucrative and sustainable. So yes, "we" as a society are not jumping into the Metaverse any time soon.

VRChat as a concept is really good, but in practice the platform fucking sucks. Everything is tied to worlds, you can’t have world-independent objects you can take everywhere,

That headset poisoned the well of VR (as most Facebook/Oculus things did), by making people think VR was accessible and enjoyable untethered--not just wireless, but no PC.

Untethered is accessible, it's not long term enjoyable. Tethered VR is the opposite. It's long term enjoyable but not accessible. A major problem continues to be the amount of available content, as the comfort problem is rapidly improving with the Index and newer HTC headsets.

I would compare it to owning an early EV. They were expensive, not great, and not feasible for longer trips because charging wasn't there. Nobody wanted to build chargers or faster charging because people didn't want to buy EVs that couldn't go anywhere and took forever to charge, and because people didn't want to buy them they weren't building chargers or making improvements to charging/batteries. It's the same story with VR and VR Content.

It's not that VR isn't reaching the realm of being great the same way EVs were years back--it's that people don't want to buy them because there isn't enough to do on them. There has to be a threshold soon where either untethered VR actually gets great--which I doubt happens in the next 5 or maybe even 10 years--or wireless, PC VR is cheap and accessible enough that people are willing to get a PC to go with it.

That type of advance is what eventually got EVs the infrastructure they needed. The hardware has to advance before the content, but it's good enough now to not be a gimmick. Good enough to be a smart purchase for gamers is another question, unless you're into Sim.

I thought it was neat until I watched some Japanese porn. It was well produced and I actually felt like I was in the action.

Then I looked down and it scared the crap out of me. I’m getting the uncensored version next time.

Literally the only reason I am even looking at VR is for flight sims, where I would want to block out my surroundings. Outside of that none of the actual VR games interest me.

DarthBuzzard t1_j3wgj78 wrote

I'd say you're a rarity. 99% of VR users use it for things other than flightsims.

Flightsims in VR are a very small niche.

sambull t1_j3wcr22 wrote

VR for sim games is really it's strong spot.. in the end though it's a really niche market to be strong at.

The depth perception really helps in things like landing, and aerial refueling and the head tracking is great and way better then those IR trackers.

buttorsomething t1_j3wgeh7 wrote

People want to be immersed. VR is immersive most don’t actually care about blocking views. That being said VR/AR needs to be in one device for it to help.
