I'm interested in games that encourage this kind of stealth playthrough - primarily video games but if there are other mediums this would be interesting to know. Specifically the ones that compensate a player for the missed resources somehow - experience, loot, etc

E.g. Hitman seems to be neutral, score system doesn't favor unnecessary casualties but is ok with knocking unconscious, as long as this doesn't trigger an alert.

I don't remember RPGs that do that. Usually non-violent way means that a goal is reached through a dialog, and stealth skills are applicable to a combat. Just passing the enemies means that there will be less grind and the enemies will still be there the next time

Any examples to share?

Dishonored. The next mission changes based on your actions in the previous mission. If you were never detected, the wanted posters are blank because they never saw you. And if you don’t kill anyone, a large portion of missions play out differently

Non violent dishonored? Really? I mean you can complete the Game without kills thats how you get the best ending, but the Game WANTS you to kill, almost all upgrades and gadgets are for violent kills and almost nothing to hide and/or escape, almost as if the non violent requirements were an aftertought

It doesn't encourage it exactly, but you can absolutely complete Dishonored without killing a single person. There's even an achievement for it.

Payday 2 has missions that give bonus cash for completing them without being spotted.

You get penalized for killing civilians. You can order them on the ground, zip tie them, and put them in an area out of the way. You have a limited number of zip ties.

You can kill guards, but you then have to answer their radio to keep dispatch from getting suspicious and calling the cops. If you kill more than three guards, they get suspicious weather you answer the radio or not.

If you kill someone, you need to bag the body and toss in a place where it will not be seen. Otherwise, witnesses will alert the cops and everyone on the map. You have a limited number of body bags.

The game isn't violence free, but it keeps the violence to a minimum if you want the bonuses from being quiet.

The only lethal power is devouring swarm. There’s blood thirsty and shadow kill which aid you in a lethal approach but don’t actually kill themselves.

There’s weapon upgrades, I suppose. But the crossbow upgrades are for non-lethal approaches as well with the sleep darts.

The game absolutely doesn’t want you to kill. It wants you to play how you like.

Cyberpunk gets violent most of the time but you can play non-lethal often, i didn't finish it yet so i don't know exactly but i don't think this approach is rewarded.

Dishonored is probably the best you can get about this thing.

Generally a lot of games focused on stealth can give you the non-lethal approach, if you are into classic go Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, there even is a boss that you don't even need to shoot at to win.

The Deus Ex games encourage nonviolent play, even allowing a "pacifist" approach. There are nonlethal weapons, too, like tranquilizers, pepper spray, and stun batons.

Heat Signature gives bonuses for completing objectives without killing, hurting or being seen.

Eta: I believe streets of rogue also gives bonuses for no violence

There are stealth games where violence isn't an option, usually horror games.

Monaco has violence options, but they usually aren't worth it.

Are the 3 game series I've personally played that have playstyles revolving around completely bypassing or quietly knocking out enemies.

Both modern Deus Ex games have achievements tied to no-kill runs, but none tied to kill runs. Idk if that's enough for you, but they're both solid games with an interesting challenge during no-kill runs.

Metal Gear Solid 3 does not actively encourage non-violence but it will at some point punish you for killing your way through the game at that point.

There is an achievement in (I guess all) Dishonored games. For one you gotta make it unseen, for the other without kills. And I have to say it was kinda fun!

I actually recently finished a play-through of this and realized that the best way to play is to stealth until you're caught, then be violent until you escape again. If you fail, let it fall back to the autosave, but don't reload a save just because you screwed up. It's incredibly more fun (for me) and you will likely still wind up with the low-chaos in every mission.

I found a great way to play this is to try to be stealthy, but then if you're caught murder your way to freedom and don't reload a save unless you die. With a little care, you still wind up with low chaos.
