In America, school shoved it down our throat that we need to make ours public. Is japanese culture different or is it just square enix.

Yes, because ninetndo is so public that it makes them look different from Square Enix, but they're both Japanese, now narrow that down in the same country

US business culture is its own special kettle of fish. You can’t expect all cultures to be the same. For instance, LinkedIn has historically been unpopular in Japan, but it can be useful in the US.
