I just found the sr80e for a good price and ordered them to see what all the fuss is about on both sides. I honestly don't know if I will love or hate them but for $60 I had to know.
I put off trying Grado for years due to the cable, build, sound preferences and stereotypes associated with them… then I said screw it, tried the rs1x, rs2x, and gs1000x and good god am I hooked on the 1000x. Currently saving and telling myself I don’t need it at the same time. Guess that’s the Grado magic.
Idk I fucking love mine. I have the GW100 and they are super (mid)bassy, almost too much. That's coming from a basshead. GR60 at low volume are nice though.
My favorite aspect is how lightweight they are. More comfy than Koss, dare I say, but I stretched my headband out so they just rest on the ears. I 3D printed replacement cups which half the weight. I throw them around, drop them on the floor, toss them at my cat when she doesn't listen, etc lol.
>I throw them around, drop them on the floor, toss them at my cat when she doesn't listen, etc lol.
That's proper "burn-in" that is
Started with the sr60 many many years ago....bought I think the 225...then splurged on the HF2 that they released to support Head-Fi. They were my daily drivers until last fall when I bought the RS1-X. I don't foresee more expenditure.
Grado just gets things "right" in my opinion. Just fun to listen to. Maybe they are not perfect with everything, but damn do they get most of it. Yes I listen to jazz, rock, electronica, industrial, etc.
I sometimes get the piercing highs that are usually the main complaints, but then I just take a break for a bit, or switch music. The RS1-X has really minimized that in my opinion. Now that I think about it, not sure if I have suffered from that at all.

Cos they're really so bad you'd want one 😏
*more than one
I owned a pair of sr80 that I loved the sound of but I hated the cable so much that I ended up selling them. I missed them and at some pointed I ended up buying some knock offs from Ali express and I ended up loving them as much.
the cable is trash all the way to their RS flagship line, idk why they still havent made it detachable.
Eh I get it's part of the charm but I just couldn't live with it. I was truly surprised at how close the knockoffs seemed to sound, and the build quality was miles ahead.
Can you tell me how you found the knockoff on aliexpress? Is it the one that's always being advertised with the shiny metal grills?
Yes I think we're talking about the same one. I bought it as okcsc wtd3 but I've seen something like it with different names. I bought it on the original okcsc store for about $50.
This headfi review is pretty much spot on. https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/okcsc-wtd-3.25958/
Go with low expectations and you'll love it if grado sound is what you enjoy.
Great, now I have yet another budget pair of headphones I don't really need but I want to buy lol
SR60 reviews for the last twenty years: you should really buy the SR80.
Dont know about that one, only had the 225e and the RS1e but I heard the signature is the same in the whole lineup, they are the single most “fun” cans I have. Depending on the song they can sound bad OR punch above their weight. I feel Grado are a luxury item, not very versatile cans but man, nothing beats them on acoustic or small assemble jazz with alot of energy.
I love them. I have the 60s and the 80s. Will just keep moving on up as I go along.
Ended up trying the SR60e at the Schiitr, and it was next to many higher end headphones, including Grados own higher end GS2000 and PS2000 or some variant of those. The SR60e sounded so much better than those two, I couldn't believe it. I don't know what Grado did to the high end models and perhaps the less said the better... but the SR60 is legitimately an awesome sounding headphone for the price.
Love my 80e so much I have to marry it
I use Grado SR80e at the studio where I work for editing dialogue. The huge upper midrange bump is perfect for making a human voice poke through a mix. I can't stand to listen to music on them though. Sounds like a really Hi Fi telephone to me.
I have some Aryas for listening to music, but the only way you'll get me off my SR80x's for daily driving is to give me some higher-end Grados. They may not be perfect, but I love 'em.
Then again, I'm old as hell, so lots of high end doesn't seem to bother me the way it might a younger person.
SR80 got me into this hobby over 10 years ago. Bought them on Craigslist for $50 new/sealed box.
I’ve tried, bought, and sold probably ~20 sets of headphones since (all open back headphones), I’ve gotten to try about 95% of headphones discussed on this sub, including the Grado line, up to the GS1000, which I owned for about a year before deciding to sell. Of all of it, there are 4 models that I plan to keep indefinitely:
Audeze LCD4
Hifiman Arya Stealth (although I have not yet had a chance to demo the Susvara)
Grado Rs2e
Grado SR80 which is held together with electric tape. I will never part with them.
Got to have that tape to complete the "library headphones" look :)
Just get it.
It's the one time you can have really nice sound by just plugging into your phone/DAP and forgetting they are even there.
It's the opposite of the auto-teabag that is spending a fortune thus skewing your expectations, lugging around an amp, lying to yourself "hmmm I think I hear it. I think I hear why these are $900".
$80, no amp, weightless headphone that disappears on your head with REALLY open sound great for guitars and gets you stupidly close to everything else in Grado's overpriced line-up.
One of the best values in headphones and easily the best Grado value. It's a special headphone.
If it doesn’t hurt my ear so much I would use it much more
That flat surface just grind on my ear and it hurts
You're using them wrong. The headband bends into shape.
yeah you have to bend the headband

I’d buy a pair of sr60/80 used only to try and swap the cable… that’s my mission
Went from 60i to 325i, now have an LCD-2 and I still love using the 325i time to time. Sometimes I considering going higher, but I'd have to give them a shot in person.
That’s the one. I found it as okcsc wtd-3 but I’m sure I’ve seen it with other names.
Check this headfi review, I think it’s pretty accurate

I bought mine from the okcsc official store on ali
I have the SR125e, it's utterly unlistenable stock but it's really just that loony 2kHz spike, bring that down with EQ and the rest of it is pretty well tuned.
Bought used 60e as the first step into open backs, loved it. Accidentally knocked it to the ground from my desk, right driver is a bit off. Bought a used 80e (which I got for cheaper than the 60e!) as the replacement. But then a friend abled to fixed the 60e, so I gave it to my gf. Absolute banger to watch movies or series together.
When I've bought SR80e just out of curiosity they were alright. Not the best but pretty decent for the price. Have their own pros and cons and very fun sounding.
I sold them and it appears they were the only headphones I regret selling. I was missing them so much so I sold my Sundaras to buy SR325x and I love them.
They are not ideal, not neutral by any means but they're the only headphones which make me dance every time I am listening to it. They're so energetic, engaging and lively sounding so I can forgive them any imperfections.
Grado are terrible, but i love it, I've own a SR880,SR125,SR250, RS2, RS1 and RS1e and sold it all, but i miss the RS1 a lot

The only thing i really hate is that they are very uncomfortable.
Truuue, it's the made in America placebo

Bought an old SR60i as a joke after looking at the FR graph. Ended up loving them so much, I bought the SR325is and GS3000e. Now looking at the GS3000x. It's the Grado magic.
