So they can canvas the entire road and everybody stays save and impatient drivers don't get dings in their clearcoat. They typically all pull over or exit every x number of miles to let traffic pass.

We were behind them yesterday as well and followed them for about 5 miles before they yielded (which seems totally reasonable to me.)

Can confirm, was cycling on a carriage way and one squeezed past me and absolutely cut the shit out of me with the salt. I imagine that wouldn't be great for your vlear coat either. I was fortunate to have goggles on.

Being delayed a minute or two by the salt trucks will almost certainly be faster than stuck behind a pile up of texting drivers in icy conditions. Even more so if drivers try to squeeze past them and get hit.

I was behind them too on 495. It slowed down traffic for sure - good for safety. However, once they exit the freeway you have a situation where now traffic is lumped together, they have just exited the freeway and the roadway ahead is thus untreated. This can lead to a situation where people are way too bunched together in slippery conditions. I understand that it is everyone’s responsibility to drive safety, but not everyone does.

I would much prefer a staggered approach by the salt trucks. If they leave one lane open traffic can slowly work through and there will be less bunched traffic on untreated roads. I do understand that the salt trucks probably do this for their own safety.
