Specifically, the rule of thumb is that what a child can draw by memory is recognizable, not necessarily completely accurate. That gives more room for creativity besides the endless tricolors and makes it clear that flags like mass’s current one doesn’t make the cut.

Few kids could draw the US flag well, but you’d know what you’re looking at right away when they try. Same with the Arizona flag.
