Shrek 2 is a masterpiece and was a masterpiece before the memes. It has everything. It has emotion, humour, action, cuteness, (puss in boots) Donkey etc.

This movie was incredible. One of my all-time favourites.

Shrek never seemed super deep. Like, its designed to mock fairy tales and Disney. TLW does that too but has an emotional core

Nope, fellow millennial here and I agree completely with you.

I thought the first one was that.

The first 2 Shreks are good. But I like TLW better.

Was this the most mature Dreamworks film yet? I think it was. Various “cuss words” (like crap and hell, even though I don’t think they should count), blood being shown, and the scariest antagonist of any film to date.
By far one of the best animated films I’ve seen in the last 10 years. Absolutely love it and cannot wait for another one.

The wolf was genuinely terrifying but also a really likeable character

The wolf scared me as an adult, easily one of the most terrifying villains in a children's movie. He also stole the moment every time he was on screen.

How to Train Your Dragon is probably up there

I watched it last night with my 4 year old and she tense up during the Wolf stuff. I'm honestly surprised we got through the movie, she's made me turn stuff like Spider-Verse off.

The HTTYD movies are right there alongside it, Hiccup losing his leg in the first one, his father in the second.
Hiccup's funeral speech for Stoick is so poignant

I'd say Prince of Egypt is.

I haven't seen all the other DreamWorks films. But El Dorado also had blood. It's something that they do very rarely. But it has impact.

I can’t believe the best film I have seen for three or four years was an animated cat film.

The best Zorro sequel.

We don’t talk about The Legend of Zorro.
twotailedwolf t1_j9uxrvg wrote
An animator on the film suggested that the opening sequence where Puss fights the giant may have been inspired by Attack on Titan. Really though, they made a western, and westerns are great plus the setting fits since Puss is basically Zorro except he's a cat and not a fox
I'm torn about wanting more of the movie. I want to see the Wolf and the 3 Bears Crime Family get their own spinoffs but the best thing about the Wolf was how sparsely he was used and the sense of mystery around him. Making him a protagonist would take away from that. Of course, maybe they could give him that story Adler from Beastars, which was about death falling in love with a woman who's soul he has to reap.
Goldie and the Three Bears in a Guy Ritchie style heist comedy where they're completely out of their depth with the level "criming" required for the job would be pretty great though.

I've watched this 3 or 4 times now (little one loves it) and I never get tired of it. It's such a good movie and I love Antonio Banderas so seeing him have success is great.
ceaguila84 t1_j9wbk90 wrote
Goddamn I love this movie so much, it's so fun and wholesome.
Great article, Antonio Banderas is such a masterful actor. Wish he had less villainy roles here in the U.S though ugh

I liked the movie a lot but I'm not gonna lie I feel like the ending would've been better if >!puss died fighting to the death with death, kitty softpaws wishes for one more life for puss, and death lets it slide(for now) because he was willing to face his fate like a man(cat)!<
Interesting_Ebb_552 t1_ja1jn41 wrote
I disagree. Puss needed to prove his worth to Death himself and the best way to pass that idea to the audience was to have Puss win a battle against Death himself. If he lost to him and died and Kitty wished him back it would feel cheap story wise.

Pinocchio’s motivation in the Del Toro version was never wanting to be a real boy. Besides that, great interview!

I want to start by saying, I am also a millennial, since I expect to get buried by others, but I genuinely feel this Puss in Boots movie is the best thing to come out of the Shrek movies.
Yeah, I know, Shrek is love, Shrek is life, but aside from the memes and the humor, nothing in the franchise has hit like this movie.
