Yes, he has a good history with comedy but I don’t see him being that buoyant.

Ryan Gosling. About 10 years ago, I would’ve said George Clooney, with no one else close. But I think he’s aged out of the role.

Grant was first a comic actor. He had just started his transition to serious acting. McConaughey could have done it, but he is too old now. I'll suggest William Jackson Harper. It is a bit close to his The Good Place role but not typecasting.
BTW, Grant hated his performance in the movie. I saw it recently and agree. He is too up, too manic. The film would benefit from a slower burn.

Yes, it’s a bit over the top but many of circumstances warrant a strong reaction. He did have a flair with rapid fire dialogue. I would to see a stage performance of the play.

I think "over the top" is the wrong expression. The movie was a theatrically stylized farce --in keeping with the fact that it was a famous play.

The movie was also held back from release for something like two years. And I too agree with Grant - it is not one of his finest hours. The original stage part is not a movie star type, as Grant clearly was, and the constant panic and hysteria just did not suit him. Perhaps meriting the enmity of Grant fans, I do wonder if someone like Lou Costello, whose constant terror in Hold That Ghost from the same era was comedy gold, could have made the whole thing funnier.
That said, I think Ryan Reynolds has the right comedic instincts to pull a part like this off.
