The 48 star American flag can still have an aligned grid of stars since 48 is not a prime prime number.

If you do a Google image search you will find some flags with the 48 stars staggered. Whether or not they were official I have no idea.

Since the opening and closing scenes are set in present day (for 1998) I think the flags are meant to also be from that time frame.

The opening and closing scenes have Ryan as an old man. I don't think the war aged him that much.
